On this day in 2011, the Indian cricket team created history at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, won the ODI World Cup and turned the entire nation into a frenzy.
Under MS Dhoni, India won the title against Sri Lanka by six wickets and 10 balls.
Whether it was Gautam Gambhir’s big achievement, Dhoni’s famous six down the field or the youth carrying Sachin Tendulkar on the shoulder, the night was an important occasion for the Indian cricket fraternity.
Mahela Jayawardene’s unbeaten 103 runs posted 2,274 / 6 to the Sri Lankan board. Among the bowlers, Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh took two wickets each.
In response, India were dismissed at 31/2, with openers Virender Sehwag and Tendulkar returning to the pavilion. Gambhir came, he set the ship for 3 runs with Virat Kohli for the host team.
After Kohli departed, Dhoni stepped up his order and formed a fine 109-run partnership with Gambhir, who missed out on a brilliant century by just three runs.
Dhoni took matters into his own hands and finally put India in line, and was dismissed for 919 runs off only 799 balls. Ending the game in style, he threw Nuan Kulasekar to the ground for a huge six. That moment was frozen over time and it will remain in the memory of Indian cricket fans.
Former cricketers and fans took to Twitter to share their reactions and experiences to celebrate the special day. Here are some responses from the micro-blogging site:
